Right To Buy Mortgage Scheme

Since 1980, most council tenants have had the Right To Buy their home at a big discount from their landlord.
To qualify for the scheme, an individual must be a tenant of at least three years’ standing. This period need not be spent in the same property, or as a tenant of the same housing authority.
Under the current rules, you can apply to buy your council home if:
- It’s your only, or main home.
- It’s self-contained, ie, you don’t share any rooms (including kitchen, bathroom and toilet) with people outside your household.
- You hold a secure tenancy (there’s a legal contract between you and the landlord).
- You’ve had a public sector landlord (for example, a council, housing association or NHS trust) for three years – it doesn’t have to be three years in a row.
- You have no legal issues with debt
